We are excited to have our M&G at Bay River Campground this spring!! Frank and Rachel manage the BRC are looking forward to us coming down and it will be a GREAT TIME with friends and family! We will have free tying lessons and fly casting. If you thought you would like to learn some new techniques or just get started in fly fishing come on down! The fishing should be good ! We are looking at Reds , Trout, and Flounder being there. I will have a map made up so you can have some great spots to try ! Trent Creek ,Chapel Creek Bay River, are some of the places we will explore. Please CK with the campground for camping details their #252-745-4879...they do tent and RV's camping if you are intrested.
The date will be May 7th. If you would like to bring something , thats great . I thought we could keep it simple and grill some sausage dogs . Frank said we will have a fire ring and maybe a gas grill....WHAT HOSPITALITY!!! They have treated the Red X Anglers like royality! This is one of the best places one can go for a fantastic fishing trip.
This is a nice place to put in a yak, they also have some boat ramps on location . I would suggest using a shallow draft boat for the skinny water. I know Island Man launched his boat in there last yr.
If you are planning on coming to this M&G , please let us know ...we need a head count.I am looking forward to seeing you there and please suggest other locations we can try out. Fresh or salt, it will be another adverture !!
Im going to be there Friday probably gonna leave my house around 9 am. I plan on doing some recon/fishing that afternoon in my kayak, anyone else that is going to be there is welcome to join me. Brad
wife and i should be there fri. afternoon. we will be bringing our boat, dont know if we can keep it docked in the water for fri. and sat. forgot to ask them.
after long debates with myself and funds i will not be able to make this event sad to say wouldve liked to meet the new members for sure hopefully there will be more catch em up and good luck be waiting for the final report
I am obligated to sub at high school on Friday ...I will be there on Saturday AM early with lap top and my fishing maps! I will not get in the water till after lunch.MHC Flyfisher is bringing her vice and Rouse is too. Rhonda and Jared will be there to help out on the water. Both know the area well!Remember to fish the south shore on a south wind and north side on a north wind...west wind will drive the water out making it low . East wind will be on the rough side, if this is the case then Trent Creek would be my choice to fish. Colors...MR 14 Mirror lures blue back and chartruse belly is the best in spring , fall EC and 808. Fly selection 2 to 3 inch minnow pattern for Trout and fly rod spoons ,woolheads streamers ,poppers , clousers are great for Reds. JDHD has had the most success on the water this spring catching fly rod Reds. PM him and I'm sure he will put you on a winning pattern.
white or pearl soft plastics on chartruese jigheads have been catching flounder this week. Work it slow as water is going to cool down a bit this week also. Should be a bit stained with rains later this week too. Same set up on popping corks should do for drum and most anything. I would think similar patters for flies but I'm clueless on that LOL.
NCTribute, I have been using a variety of colors (Alot of contrasting colors)but the biggest difference I feel right now is due to the recent hatches maturing slightly is the size. 3" or below seems to working better for me on both flies and soft plastics. Running the fly on the edges of the bait schools and letting it flutter down as if saying "Ya got me, I'm wounded" seems to cause the strikes. If that don't work, I make the bait erratic as possible, acting a little like Eddie!
I am not going to be able to make this event. I am going to stay local to fayetteville and spend sometime with my family over the weekend! I am really sorry about this but i am going to be in the jacksonville area at the end of the month.
Looks like the earliest I can get off tomorrow is 3:00 - 3:30, but if it looks like rain and t-storms for the evening, probably sleep at home and leave early in the morning. No fun setting up a tent in the rain.
Glad to have you coming down Northwest !Please bring your vice! I know if it ain't on a # 10 hook or bigger I get nervous! I will tell you most of my patterns are on size 4 to 1 for salt and 8 to 2/0 for fresh( Bowfin,Stripers on the larger ). My main quarry are Spec trout and Reds.It will be great to see new style of flies and how to tie them! I will be there by 7:30 AM., fly tying and fly casting.I know several will be spending the night so I don't think you can get there too early ...look up JDHD he is a local guide and a great friend. He will be one the forementioned spending the night. He will be on the water early I'm sure!
Brad, I will be in Bayboro around noonish. I will be in a "Have a Nice Day" Yellow Mariner. I'm camping Friday but have to leave early Saturday (Before noon). I am bring some stuff to make chicken kabobs tonight and some cold beverages. My number is 252-622-5372.
Alan, do you need any materials?
It was great to meet so many of you this morning. Really wished I could fish. When I got home, I went to my garage and just looked at my yak for a while. Hope everyone caught fish. It sound like folks were off to a great start.
JC ...it was great to meet you and really looking forward to you fishing with us! Now for the fishing report...We had a smaller group to attend the M&G than hoped. I attribute the low attendance to the dense fog and the rain the nite before. Most everyone caugh fish but yours truly! Oh well there's next time .I would like to thank Charlie Cobb and Jan for coming down to the M&G...he met Frank and Rachel and others at the BRC. Thanks again Charlie!!Most of us were on the water when they arrived but please CK with Eddie if you want to help out Charlie and Jan with the fund raiser. We can use all the help we can get! JDHD caught Trout and Flounder and Yakattack caught 2 Trout and 2 legal size Flounder. Rouse and NC Tribute found fish as well. Rhonda caught a nice Trout and Flounder too. Yakattack83 also boated some fish but I don't know how many.Jared and Eddie fished in our group as well and Jared and Eddie spotted several small schools of Reds in the 16 to 18 inch range. Jared did boat a Trout. Jeff K arrived and joined in . Unfortunatly he is in my group of non catchers! George P 's sons were there too but I don't know if they fished or not but their presence was appreciated! We will pray for their sister at Duke hospital. One of the highlites was watching our newest arrival in NC from Oregon. His name on line is Northwest! He was on the bank with an unusual looking yak! He did not have anyway of transporting a 17 ft yak as i could see! nothing but his car! Well it turns out the yak is 60 yrs old and it's made of canvas! The ribbings and spars are made out of MNT Ash! The whole thing came apart and went into cloth bags and into his small trunk! WOW , this is just too cool!! Wind shifted mid afternoon and water roughed up and we decided to start cooking. Frank and Rachel provided a gas grill and set us up with a nice cooking station! Since we had 10 to 13 members and we had 48 sauage dogs. We decided to include the whole camp at Bay River Campground in our cook out! We had a really good time and met a bunch of great campers and maybe future members on NC Angler! Once again a special thanks for Frank and Rachel who helped make our meeting work so well ...I recommend them highly!! My thanks to everyone who helped and made it down for the M&G. We did have a great time!! If I failed to mention someone that attended please post and tell us how things went! I know a bunch were on the water by 7:30 and I might have missed the count....Allen
wife and i were also there when everybody was out. we were going to stick around for the cook out but my diabetes got the best of me sat. still got me down today. sorry i missed you all. i did get to meet frank and rachell, seemed to be real nice people.
It was nice getting to put some faces to names. I had a great time at Bay River Campground, will be going back again. JDHD joined me on Friday for some fishing he managed some small flounder and trout and I managed to get a small trout right before dark. The winds were swirling pretty bad and it was tough to stay in one spot and fish. Saturday we were on the water by 5 am and just as the sun was coming up the fog rolled in, and it was thick. JD had to leave early Saturday but he caught some more trout and flounder, my total for Saturday was 4 small trout and 1 small flounder and all the jellyfish tenticles I wanted haha. Again thanks to Frank and Rachel they made me feel welcome and were great hosts. Jim aka Northwest kayak was very cool, Allen I thought the same thing about how he got that big ole yak there with that car then he folded it up and put it in a couple of bags no bigger than a large tent bag, go figure. Brad
Glad to see that it was a great success. Hate I missed it but hoping to get to meet some of you soon.
Darrell
