\r\n Does a lure have to be moving for a shad to hit. If I threw a double drop rig out in the river with a heavy sinker on the bottom and two lightweight grubs on the traces and just let it sit with the grubs swimming in the current would that work? I have heard of Sabiki rigs working very good for shad bit I think it is unlawful to use more than 2 hooks on a rig for shad.\r\n

There is nothing in the law to state you can only use 2 lures on a rod. I\'ve heard of others using a Sabiki rig, but I havent\' tried it. The problem with putting one on the bottom is shad tend to run high in the water column at times and that would put your bait out of the zone.
    \n
\nWhen the shad really get here thick you can cast and catch them on with frequency. Right now its hit and miss, mostly miss. Shad come in out of the ocean and run up the river to spawn. So give them time to get there groove thing on...\r\n

\r\n I would like to fish like this because you could fish more than one rod this way. And lately I have just been going to the bank and casting and retrieving for like a half hour or more with no action. Thats not real entertaining either. I suppose one of the reason I love surf fishing is just standing around watching the rod tip while drinking a Pepsi.\r\n

\r\n Well Donald at Custom Marine told me he used to sell a lot of Sabiki rigs to some guys and then they stopped buying them because they were getting busted for having more than 2 lures on a line but if there is nothing to that law i\'ll try it myself but if there is a law like that it would sure be nice to hear about it before I try it. \r\n

\r\n Sabiki Rig, Alabama rig etc. are lawful in NC as well as 3-hook bottom rigs. even on Mountain Trout Waters it allows for the adding of dropper flies. No specific number given.

\r\n I saw one!!!!!! That was yesterday, but did not get one hit. That was at Kinston. Only heard of one catch late on tuesday at the hwy 70 bridge. I keep hearing of a few catches at Pitch Kettle Creek area. The one I saw broke the surface 6 feet from me, and scared me.\r\n

\r\n I guess it\'s time to keep the fishing pole in the car again. I work in Rocky Mount and can stop at Battle Park after work most days. I\'m planning to visit Old Sparta tomorrow morning, I\'ll let yall know how it goes. My number 1 rule when shad fishing is that if I\'m fishing alone I\'m in the wrong spot...\r\n

\r\n still no shad today I ran into a guy fishing that lost one right when it got up to the bank. I did manage to catch and release a few rock though s it wasn\'t a wasted trip. I ended up having to pull an old man out of the mud TWICE... it sure is wet and nasty around here\r\n

\r\n Fianlly caught a few today. Missed more than I caught but I finally got the hang of it... fiesty little fish for sure. I threw my arm off to catch these 3 though. I\'m gonna vacume seal and freeze them for cutbait.

\r\n Eddie I use a tandem rig, a regular shad fly above the nail fly. That gives me the chance to catch 2 at a time...
    \n
\nOnly thing for casting 2 different sizes of flys together is to watch the "yaw" rate. One fly lighter than the other creates a wobbling action and the cast may not be straight, may hit you in the back. So wear a hat and sunglasses for sure.\r\n

\r\n Thanks Scott I tied up a few last night, was thinking of the tandem rig also. Thought of trying the heavier fly on the bottom might cast a little better. Will try them both ways and see how it goes.\r\n

\r\n Can someone tell me the advantage of using a fly rod with a sinking fly instead of just using a spinning combo? I can totally understand on a floating fly. Sorry for the dumb question just know really nothing about fly fishing and was wondering about this. Is it because the fly is too light to cast with regular line so you use weighted fly line? At least I understand most on here use a sinking fly for shad fishing..\r\n

Part of it is the fun factor. Playing a fish on a 6\' ultralight rod is cool. Playing the same fish on a 8.5\' fly rod is really cool.
    \n
\nSinking flies can still be pretty light and casting can be tough with spinning gear. Floating line can also act a bit like a bobber and keep your fly closer to the surface as is drifts but without the big splash of a bobber.
    \n
\nThat\'s my theory. $0.02 I still haven\'t rigged my old fly rod after 30 years of storage. Then I get to relearn what to do with it. Soon... :-)\r\n

\r\n Most shad flies are weighted, the weight is tied in, check out the eyes in my flies. They will sink even using a floating fly line. They will only sink so deep depending on how long of a leader you are using. Sinking fly lines get the fly even deeper into the water column.

\r\n If you can find a place to launch into Pitchkettle Creek you will be fine. The main flow of the Neuse will be pretty stong and high, but the crek will be fine with hardly any flow.\r\n

\r\n Spring Garden boat ramp is located on the main of the Neuse River. So the shad fishing along with stripers when they get there are good.

\r\n As far as I know there isn\'t any public access. The closest ramp is Core Creek, then Maple Cypress, Cowpen Landing. Long haul on a yak. Core Creek would be a good option, especially if the water is high. Shad are caught up the creek also.\r\n

\r\n Thanks for the help and the link guys! Ok then what is Cool Springs boat ramp? If you go on Google Earth behind weyerhauser is creek with a 180 degree bend in it and in the crook of the bend is a picture of Cool Springs boat ramp. Is this Spring Garden? It doesnt really like the main Neuse River to me but maybe it is..\r\n

\r\n OK after some search, you are on Swift Creek with Cool Springs. The other side of the river, travel west, go past the bridge and continue. You will come upon the school road and the ramp is at the dead end.\r\n

\r\n I\'ve been to Cool Springs ramp with someone else, just to take a look at it. Great lookin ramp there. I am thinking that the creek to the left as you go down stream from the bridge, and Weyerhouser plant is Swift Creek, but not possitive. I have been there years ago, but just a couple of times.\r\n
