Default Fishing the Jacksonville/Onslow Co./Camp LeJeune areas

On a regular basis new members to this site ask questions concerning fishing in this area. In this thread I hope to answer some of those questions and provide links to other threads on this topic. First off I want to say "Welcome to NC, Onslow Co., and NCAngler." For those of you in the service stationed at Camp LeJeune, New River, Geiger etc....THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! As you may have figured out, you are now on the Coast and therefore surrounded by saltwater and brackish water. Never fear, there are freshwater fishing opportunities.

    Saltwater fishing
There many opportunities for fishing the salt, both from land and boat. Saltwater species that are prevalent and sought after by small boat and from land are speckled trout, flounder, red drum, bluefish, sea mullet(whiting), croaker, spanish mackeral and spot. Those that have larger boats can fish for cobia, mahi(dolphin), king mackeral, spanish mackeral, grey trout, flounder, black sea bass, various groupers and other reef fish/bottom fish. To find out what these fish are and the regulations for these fish you can visit this link: http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/mf/ You should visit that site often as the regulations are constantly changing. Note: Unless you are fishing from a pier, head boat or other charter you must have the appropriate license to fish saltwater.

    Fishing locations
For the land based angler you have many locations to choose from. There are three fishing piers that jut out into the ocean in excess of 1,000 feet located on Topsail Island. These are the Seaview Pier, Surf City Ocean Pier and the Jolly Roger Pier. On Emerald Isle there is the Bogue Inlet Pier and the Oceanna Pier. An internet search will provide you with each of these pier's websites where you can find more info.

In addition to the piers, you can walk the beaches and fish the surf and the areas around the inlets. On Topsail Island there are several public parking areas on the northern end of the island within Onslow Co. At the extreme northern end of the island you can drive/park on the beach (without a permit) in a small section if you wish and fish the New River Inlet area. This link will provide an additional link to the beach accesses http://www.onslowcountync.gov/depart...x?pageid=21502 On the southern end of Topsail Island there are several places within the towns of Surf City and Topsail Beach to park and fish. These include the Soundside Park next to the bridge over the ICW in Surf City and a parking area at the extreme southern end of the island in Topsail Beach. This parking area can be found by driving Ocean Blvd. almost to the end and turning right onto Godwin Ave. and then left onto Shoreline Dr. turning left into the parking area. Note: Most beaches require you to obtain a permit from the municpality that the beach is in. Other areas include Queens Creek at the bridge, Bear Creek at the ramp, Morris Landing near Holly Ridge and the fishing pier at the Riverfront Park in Jacksonville next to Kerr St. Marina. On Emerald Isle there are again a number of public parking areas where you can park and fish the surf. If you have DoD access to Camp LeJeune then you have a number of options of areas that you can fish from land. Some of these include Onslow Beach, Onslow Beach Swing Bridge and the pier next to it, Sneads Ferry bridge area, and French Creek. For those of you that want to travel a little further, then Ft. Macon State Park at the north end of Emerald Isle is a good spot as is Radio Island between Morehead and Beaufort for fishing from shore.

For the boater there are numerous places to launch a boat. These include the wildlife ramps at Emerald Isle, Cedar Point Campground in Croatan National Forest, Swansboro/Cedar Point, Shell Rock Landing, USO in Jacksonville, the ramp under the high rise over the ICW at N. Topsail, Soundside Park in Surf City and Turkey Creek. Other ramps include Northeast Creek Park, Kerr St. Marina, Sneads Ferry Marina, Freeman's Creek, New River Air Station, Magnolia Landing in Verona Loop, Great Neck Landing, Matthews Landing and Stella Bridge.

Additionally, there are numerous headboats and fishing guides available. Several headboats operate out of Morehead City/Atlantic Beach and include the Carolina Princess and Capt. Stacey. There are upwards of 20 guides that operate in the immediate area, some of whom are members of this website. If you are military you can go to this site and book a trip thru Outdoor Adventures on Camp LeJeune http://www.mccslejeune.com/Outdoor/index.html . In addition, for our military there are free fishing opportunities at www.militaryappreciationday.org which provides a free trip in June out of Morehead and Sept/Oct. out of Southport.

    Freshwater and brackish water fishing
Although Jacksonville and Onslow Co. sit on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean there are freshwater fishing opportunities available. The New River and the creeks off of it become fresh as you go up them as does the White Oak River, Cape Fear and Neuse. Freshwater areas require different fishing licenses. For info on fishing licenses you can go to http://www.ncwildlife.org/ and http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/mf/ Typical freshwater species you can expect to catch are largemouth bass, catfish, gar, bowfin and pickerel. However on the Neuse and Cape Fear you can catch stripers and shad.

    Fishing locations
When talking about fishing in Jacksonville you have to talk about the New River and it's tributaries. When you get above the Wildlife ramp at the USO the New River tranistions from brackish to freshwater. A productive bank fishing area is located behind Raintree Subdivision off Gum Branch Rd however access to this area is on private land and there you can catch catfish, bowfin and gar. The Alligator Bridge on NRAS is a good place to fish also for gar. Southwest Creek and Northeast Creek are areas where you can catch both saltwater species(speckled trout and red drum) but also freshwater species as you get further up in them.

Again having DoD access provides additional fishing opportunities. Located on Camp LeJeune are a number of freshwater ponds. For more info on fishing these you can go to these websites: http://www.mccslejeune.com/Outdoor/index.html and http://www.lejeune.usmc.mil/gwarden/fishing.html In addition there is the Oak Grove Recreational Area located on the Trent River upstream from Pollocksville and it has a boat ramp, camping and picnic area. Info on this area can be found here http://www.mccslejeune.com/Outdoor/index.html

Other locations for fishing freshwater include the old rock quarry ponds in Maysville(note: these are pay ponds), Haywood's Landing and the kayak launch on the White Oak upriver of Stella, the ponds located on Hwy 24 west of Beulaville(note: you must pay at Mom and Pop's store app. 3.25 miles outside of Beulaville), Maxwells Mill Pond, Sutton Lake, Holland Shelter Creek, NE Cape Fear River and the Neuse and Trent Rivers. Shad can be caught in the Neuse River around Kinston and Pitch Kettle Creek.

Boat ramps for fishing freshwater can be found at the Stella Bridge, Haywood's Landing Wildlife Ramp, the Kayak Launch above Haywood's Landing, Pollocksville Wildlife Ramp, Wildlife ramp at Beaulaville on the NE Cape Fear, Wildlife Ramps located on Holland Shelter Creek and numerous ramps on the Neuse River. You can find locations of all NC Wildlife boat ramps at this link: http://www.ncwildlife.org/Boating/WheretoBoat.aspx

Outstanding info! Very accurate as well. Good to know that the New River transitions from brackished to fresh at the ramp adjacent to the USO. Never knew that & would've been fishing from my boat much sooner in the New River had I known this! Thanks again for the info.

Dependent upon amount of rain you can catch largemouth bass in the New River down at the overpass and speckled trout a good 3.5 miles up river of the USO and .75 miles up Blue Creek

Great info as always speck. Also, for catfish, there have been plenty slayed by the notorious ncpierman just up from the USO launch about a mile or so right where it narrows. Can't wait to fish it when I get back from this deployment.
