A couple of my biggest disappointments in fishing were getting access to ponds that had not been managed or legally fished (in both cases I found evidence of trespass) in years. Vegetation got out of hand and most of the fish were stunted.

Biggest thing in this day and age you have to worry about with ponds is not friends and neighbors keeping too many fish. It's those that wait for you to go out of town for the weekend and seine your pond. I know of several incidents locally.

Ahh, the advantages of the stumps that last for decades under water......and a truck won't pull the seine out in some of the ponds in the foothills, with black gum stumps....

I know the OP wanted public waters only, but has anyone personally fished Richmond Mill Lake near Laurinburg? It has a reputation for some of the biggest Bluegills on the East Coast.

It's very expensive to fish there and extensively managed. I would consider it cheating. . .

You are getting some big 'gills. In Eastern NC, I've seen some near that size from Mattamuskeet and the NE Cape Fear River. Currituck had some big 'gills at one time, but the fishing there is not anything like it once was. Anything bigger I have personally witnessed has been another type of Sunfish.

If it's the lake I'm thinking of its somewhere around $600 per person per day.

    Sent from my kayak...

Its funny and irritating at the same time all the people that say they have caught huge bluegill up to 3 pounds and i'll bet they don't even weigh a pound. Youtube is a good example of this. I know that the gills from Richmond mills are as big as they say tho.

I was just speaking of finding trash and well worn trails on ponds that supposedly hadn't been fished in years, not a major theft like you are talking about. In that VA link I posted earlier, it does recommend seining as an option if you get too much stunting, but I think they mean your own pond...

If you need a bunch removed the old fashioned way, I may be able to help you sometime...

Leavin for alberta in the morning and hope to bring home a bunch of ice fishing jigs etc. They would work great the way I fish for panfish.
