Been working on a lot of different patterns lately.
These are tied up for bass. Topwater floater/diver, APDIVER style. I get a lot of use of these. I keep one tied on from spring thru fall. I usually carry 3 flyrod setups in the boat.
Not sure how I like the Fishskulls, I fished some of them this weekend and caught two rock 21in and 25in but they didn't seem to want to ride in the water correctly. Normal barbell eyes will always ride hook down, these were riding on the side. It seems like it didnt matter to the fish but bothered me a little.
There is a method for using them that will help them ride with the point down. Basically, there is more metal on one side than the other. Adding a couple of wraps of lead wire on the lower part of the hook bend will also help.
Yeah, the fish Skulls have a heavy side so you can theoretically put them on to ride hook up or down.
I watched an interesting video on YouTube this morning where a guy just used white hareline baitfish emulator tied in at the back and palmered forward. Then colored it with prismacolor markers and finished with a fish skull. I had to immediately go and buy a couple of the markers and try it. I'd been interested in getting a few anyways. I really need to get some shorter BFE though because I had to trim so much off when trying to shape it. The markers work well. I'll get a few more soon. Maybe I'll even get a pic worthy fly with this technique!
Just got some new materials in the mail today.. I see some San Juan squirmy worms in the near future. I had some nice shellcrackers slamming them last year.
Slump buster style, I do not have any cone heads so I used some wire wraps to give it a just a little more weight to sink it slowly. Body is grizzly zonker, collar is crosscut brown zonker.
Scott, You just opened up a can of worms and sparked my interest with those mice. I'm going to make something similar but using a frog hook. Tossing up in the tules out here in AZ they'll get eaten for sure, but need to be more weedless.
Just tie in a double loop mono weed guard. I was thing about doing some of those. I have a place theses will work fine, but those mill ponds are tough without weed less hooks.
Just type in Moorish Mouse an plenty of links on how to tie.
Mason Hard Mono in 20lb works good. I Like those Moorish Meeses Scott. Cool variation of the Gurgler. Well done! I'd bet that specks or drum would eat 'em too if shrimp are popping.
Trigger: You talking about a double frog hook? Not sure of a good weedless solution for that which would float right-side up and not be fishless along with weedless. Mustad, Gamakatsu & Tiemco all make "Stinger" hooks for bass bugs. With a mono weed guard you could probably fling those up in the tules without getting fouled all the time. Let us know what you come up with.
I tried tying up some micro crease flies. I thought I had some sticker eyes somewhere but who knows? These are tied on #6 Mustad big game hooks. Maybe I should've started off with a couple bigger ones first, my fingers are clumbsy when it comes to small flies.
