Wow...after having spent roughly 6 hours on the water today and knowing how beautiful it was out, I am surprised to see this being the first post of today's fishing report for all Kayak Fishing categories. (Maybe everyone else is still out fishing.
)
I left the house around 6:30 a.m., and slow-played my way to MHC, via Wal-Mart and the gas station for some Coffee and a Honey Bun (breakfast of Champs.) Arrived around 7:45 a.m., and started preparing for the day's outing. I believe the car said it was 38 degrees around 7:45 a.m., and it felt every bit of it.
rkelly31 (Ryan) arrived just shortly after, and he and I introduced ourselves and started paddling out from the new fishing pier area at the East base of the MHC Causeway.
About 2 hours in, staying close and working through the marsh-stacks along Hwy 70, I hooked into a red, right at 15". Figured I would get a picture just in case this was going to be the end of the story. Fortunately, just within several more casts, I picked up two more reds, one at 17" and one at 16", but THICK. All three took a new-penny 3" Gulp shrimp on an 1/8 oz yellow jig head.
Worked our way through the cuts and back into the open, drifting the grass edge back from the channel that leads to Town Creek Marina. Pitched to the deep at what looked like a nice hole and picked up an 18" flounder. As the story goes...I pulled it up by the fishing line and immediately realized that his cheek was somewhat already torn, and the hook fell right out, bouncing the fish off of and OUT of the kayak.
Aaargh...I was already imagining a tasty flounder and shrimp dinner!
Anway, that would be it for the day. The water was not quite "gin" clear as accurately described by Philip the weekend after Thanskgiving, much due to the recent rain I am sure. But it wasn't far from it, and as still as I think I have ever fished during a kayak fishing trip. There was literally no movement of bait, fish boils, "slurps" (as described by Lefty)...nothing. It was seriously quiet, and plenty peaceful.
It was great to meet Ryan and to spend some time on the water with him. He did one heck of a job "scouting" for me today. (With thanks from Druminator for how he cordially described one of our previous fishing adventures at the Queen
.)
Hope everyone has had a good week. The next 3-4 weekends look slammed for me, as I am sure they do for most. So from now till then, take care and post some reports to for me to drool over until I get back on the water.
