Might as well go ahead and get it started. It was about this time last year when I first heard rumors of shad being caught. Anybody heard anything yet?

I've already heard of a few being caught in some very unlikely places on some very unlikely gear... ie: Slocum Creek on a 17mr, or North River on a trout fly.

The Neuse River around Goldsboro is suppose to crest on Sunday just over 19 feet. Kinston is suppose to crest on Wednesday and then on down river. I am forecasting the first shad to be caught around Goldsboro by the end of Jan. Two years ago on the 25th of Jan they were wearing the shad out in Wayne County.

Seems like a lot of people missed the first of the run last year. Hopefully it will be a good year for the Shad.

How far up the neuse do the shad typically run? I've always fished the roanoke for rockfish but never have been shad fishing, but have heard a lot about it.

I have built up more than 50 hours of overtime on top of my week of vacation time. I WILL catch a shad this year. I will forgo flyrodding for one and just take a spinning rod. Ready to guide me again Mr. Hobbs?

I got lucky enough to go with Canoecat54 once last year and Me, him, and another guy caught close to one hundred. All with spinning. I can't imagine being patient enough to stick with a fly rod while everyone else is reeling them in on spinning reels.
