After an emotional week for the family, I spent alot of time re-rig'n the boat as I brought it back from W-S.

Got it loaded up and the boy and I decided to head to Jordan to stretch the boat legs.. so we thru in a couple poles stop'd and got a few minna's and headed on up to the lake.

Saw alot of fish hittin the top water (probably bugs - White bass) and saw one heck of a catfish roll on somethin in the shallows,, so we thru out some baits under bobbers and floated one minnow and put another minnow on a weighted line.

For only fishin a couple hours, we got lucky! at least my boy did. He reel'd in a catfish (pretty wild lookin colors to it) and a white bass. Since we got to the lake after 1 p.m. and ran a bit, caught a couple fish and decided to not press our luck as the weather was starting to pick up.

So had a good day, great to be back on the water, boat ran like a champ, boy did his usual fresh water fishin thing and we had a good time being together. We plan on going back up tomorrow in the morning, hopefully with momma and my youngest in tow for his first trip out... we'll see! :) We brought some minnows home to let B hold one/check them out... I think he'll catch on pretty easy to the fishin thing! :)

Something I left out... kinda funny...

We decided to move spots, so I go up and pull up the anchor, while I'm doing this my boy yells out, Dadda we lost a rod.... What???

He had reeled in the lines, but thru another one out, and it hung up on something, so he just lean'd it against the gunnel... well when I was pullin the anchor up, the boat was moving forward,, next thing ya know... Ploop... over the side it went.

I was a little peaved and kinda reprimanded him a little (losin the camera still fresh in my mind..),, but then said, well we can try to get it back... or it's yer allowance money! So he was all about tryin to get it back. :D

So, my junior fisher learned a new tip today... how to catch a fishin pole ;)
I put on a crappie rig with a heavy weight and slung it out to scrape the bottom and hope to snag the fishin line... well it worked!! :) Had to snag it twice before we could actually get the line.. but finally got the line and pulled up the pole out of 5 ft of water. Lucky!

He asked me if I was happy... I said yeah, I feel better that we got it back, but thank you for tellin me it went in the water... he apologized tonight before goin to bed, but I said it's ok, I'd already forgot about it...

I did that years ago as a kid fishing off Springmaid pier in Myrtle beach. I was trying to lean over the rail and jig like some of the bigger guys and lost my grip when I hit the rail... Pop fussed at me and he started dragging a Hopkins on the bottom... #rd try he got it...Unbeleiveable!!!! We or should i say "I" got lucky that day.. He was firm but fair in his reprimand so it stuck with me always!!
Good job Dave, great day with the boy!!

Securing gear is an important lesson! I had a similar experience with my grown son the Christmas before last with his brand new rod & reel. We found it too.

Unfortunately I seem to be a slow learner of this particular lesson. I lost a rod rigger last year because someone on the boat picked up the rod and the rod rigger came out of the holder too and fell into the ocean. So I bought safety straps for the new one and the others.

Yesterday I had a new person on the boat (very experienced angler just new to my gear and boat). I told him the story of the rod riggers but I failed to clip the safety strap to the boat. Sure enough, later he picked up the rod and over the rod rigger went. Totally MY fault!

Guess I'll lose my allowance this week cause there is no way we were finding it in 60' of ocean.

Do you mean that a man with gps and scuba gear can't find something he lost in 60' of water. Come on buddy, where is that can do attitude? we are going to have to send you an early Christmas present....A Mann's marker bouy with a 12 oz bank sinker and 120' of line....:D I made up a few safety lines for kayak fishing out of some of those coiled cords off some phone chargers and such using leader crimps and mini-carabiners and trolling snaps. They worked great .....when I had sense to use them. Now they are buried under a bunch of flea market stuff. They aren't doing one bit of good there.:( Knowing better and doing better are sometimes two different things.....

Reminds me of how God treats us. We mess up and feel bad about it. Go to Him in prayer to say we're sorry only to hear Him say, thanks for telling me my child, you're forgiven and it's forgotten! Hopefully we learn and don't repeat the mistakes. Thanks for sharing the story Dave.

Hum... scuba diving on a recovery project....seems I taught a class on that once or twice. Anyway - I decided I'll spend $40 to buy a new one instead of $35 on recovering the old one from a desert of underwater sand. But hey, it was a good thought!

And I'll be happy to put that early Christmas present to good use marking my favorite grouper holes though!

Yeah I thought of the money issue too... but the opportunity to rib you was there so I took it.;) Actually a recovery mission might have proved intersting even if unsucessful. (especially if that was a king strike that started the ball rolling.) I know there would be some fishing involved in a recovery trip. It's too late on that one though unless you got numbers and a willing partner.

Yup, initiating B on minnows. Levi kept tryin to give one to him, but he wouldnt grab it.. he'd touch it really lightly then pull his finger back, but wouldnt pick it up. I'm sure that'll change down the road... :);)
