For Smallies I would suggest the Buncombe and Madison county sections of the French Broad. Plenty of parks and roadside access. http://riverlink.org//wp-content/uploads/2013/08/riverguide.pdf

For trout better public spots are about an hour or so from Asheville. If you are more concerned with just catching a trout the best bet would be one of the delayed harvest areas in neighboring counties like the Mills River (30 min). They usually have public access, but can be crowded. If you are looking for more of a full experience where you would hike or camp, then the Pisgah Forest is your place.

Thank you sir! The help is much appreciated. I see you're a kayak guy. Should I consider taking my 10 foot Wilderness Systems Pamlico (sit in) at all? I use it inshore at coast and on Piedmont lakes.
