Heading to Avon for a few days in mid-May, wondering if anybody's caught anything in the big water of the Pamlico Sound there?

Better to head up to the marshes near Bodie Island Lighthouse, or down toward Hatteras Inlet?

Are the currents at Hatteras Inlet as strong as the currents at Oregon Inlet?

If you've caught fish in that area, what did you use? Thinking of a Diesel Minnow on a weighted hook, or a redfish magic.

My son lives in Buxton, and mid-May is a great time to be on the OBX. You don’t mention whether you will be surf fishing, yakking, or have access to a boat, would like to charter, or take a head boat, or pier fish or fish from the relatively new bridge over Oregon Inlet. Are you planning to target a specific fish, or will you be happy catching anything that is biting? For example, the cobia fishing should be heating up about then, but you will need a boat or to arrange a charter. More info would be helpful. We can then start to narrow down our suggestions, and your choices.

As described above, from Avon you have so many options you are probably going to need more time—or you will want to go back soon. There are a couple of guys here who know that area well…tell us more about your plans.

That time of year the cobia should be filtering in but you'll either need to pier fish or run a boat inshore or nearshore...Speaking of boats...Hatteras currents can be just as dangerous as OI and I'm guessing Hatteras isn't going to be maintained as well as OI. The most recent survey of those inlets show both channels at greater than 10 ft. The OI channels is approximately 400 ft wide, Hatteras is 200 ft. Given this I'd say it may be a little riskier at Hatteras.

As for fishing, the grass flats/marshes should be beginning to be populated with speckle trout and redfish by then. The marshes are probably your best bet unless you're after something like sheeps. Flounder should be popping by then but ehhhhhh, you can't keep them so why bother. If you have the means and can get out the inlet mahi, wahoo and kings should be good by then. Lots of good sized kings are pulled in between Look Out. and Hatteras.

Mid-May is good timing as long as you have the means so get out and enjoy!!

Chris, I will probably do some surf fishing, and I'm taking my 14' sea kayak (which I use for inshore fishing). Medium to light tackle in the sound, hoping to hook something that could pull me around a while!

Thanks for the warning about Hatteras! Will keep away from both and stick to the marshes.
