Has anyone here tried using balloons to fish from shore? I am going to try it this weekend if the wind is right and see how well it will work from shore. I read a little bit about it online but was wondering if any of you had ever tried it and could give me some advice. I am basically going to attach a balloon a couple feet above a wire leader and hook and float out cut mullet or whole depending on the size I catch.

Good Morning f517,
I've used this technique a couple of times in FL and I'm by NO means an expert. If you have an offshore wind, the baloon acts as a sail and is carried out to sea. At some point, the drag of your off reel line stops this drift and you have reached the extent of your "cast".
I leave it to better minds to comment further. Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks savasa, That is pretty much what I have heard so far, so I am going to give it a shot today if the wind is good. I'll post on here tomorrow if I have any luck with it

In the "off season" we often fish balloons off the end of BIP. It's an easy way to get your bait way out there. Just let it freeline until it's where you want it to be. Once in a while I'll do it off the boat when we're drift fishing just to keep the lines from tangling. Baloons ... don't leave home without them. :D

Question: Isn't it illegal to release these balloons into the water? Don't fish and sea turtles eat them and die?

I'm not insulting anyone's methods... But I thought it was illegal to release balloons where they were likely to fall into the ocean because of the hazard to wildlife.

Edit: They may not be illegal in N, they WERE illegal in PA within 100 miles of the ocean. But they do appear to be dangerous to exactly the kind of wildlife we all cherish so much. Do a google search on this.

BigLen - I think all of us here are pretty eco-conscious. When we are out we will try to pull in trash we see, if we can. You'd be surprised how much trash you see sometimes 50+ miles off the coast.

I appreciate your info. Everybody needs to know these things and be a steward of our resources.

Ahhhh. I thought they were floating out, and when you got to the end you released them.

My apologies.

I was going to tie them to the swivel above my line. When the fish takes pulls the pressure should pop the balloon and leave it hanging by the knot on the line so I can take it off and throw it away once I (hopefully land the fish
