I have caught a lot of bass around the earthen dam , and in the coves just before it. Piney Bluff go right straight down the lake on the left side before you get to the dam in around 5' to 15' of water. Seen some real nice 10 plus bass early this year , caught several 5 to 6 pounders. Also if you go towards the powerhouse fish up the right side of the bank, I had one break off there, and caught several 5 and 6 pounders there too.The lake is very clear so use the wind and sun to your advantage , they'll spook if you're too close to them.

Also if you go to the marina pick up a map of the lake . They have some real good details on them and it'll help to navigate around lake . My avatar is from the top of the new stack at the powerhouse. If you look at the far side , that's the dam Im talking about. It's closer to get there from the pine hall launch

Your welcome, and let me know if I can be of any more help.
Carolina rig a purple or electric blue worm on hot days and fish it slow around any cover. I also use berkely vanish line because of the lakes clear water.

Its up between Greensboro and Winston-Salem, about an hour and 20 minutes from you. Look for "Belews Creek, NC" on Mapquest and you'll find it. I have family that just moved to Concord. I have been to High Rock and Norman so far.

I agree ZOOKER, Great early season.
Even in the dog days of summer if you go to the Piney Bluff area and points between 150 on into the smaller sides of the lake.
I've caught a limit of 5 that went 12 pounds in 2 hours in Feb-05.
Cold ... livewells frozen shut , all around the earthen dam.

<Novice musings follow>

I take it from the thread that Belews is heated by power plant discharge, is that right? Therefore, I figure the bass are turning on a little earlier there than other nearby lakes... I also figure there's some geographic progression (certain parts of the state would generally lead others, probably southeast toward northwest, with most emphasis on altitude....)

If the bass are turning on in Belews, what would that tend to suggest for Jordan and the Triangle area? Are we looking at another few weeks, a month...? <shrug>

Or am I just making stuff up?

Yep.Your correct on that.
Belews is usually a couple of weeks or even a month ahead of most .
However there are cooler sections on this lake that seems to be active the same time as the ponds and small lakes around the Pilot Mtn. area.
You know I use to go by the dogwood blooms and redbud blossoms to judge on the pre spawn/spawn, and in the past it seemed to be real close .
I guess I still do this. Everytime I spot a redbud, I can't help but think of crappie and bass stretching out the line. I know this might sound far fetched , but it has worked for me.
Tight lines!

As the title to the left notes, I am a "New Angler." So I'd like to know where and how those of you fishing Belews with success are doing it. I went out Saturday morning (3/10), fished up and down the west side of the lake from Piney Bluff Access up towards and almost all the way to the Dam and got not so much as a nibble or a strike. If you count tree limbs, I am doing well however. I realize I am new at this but its awfully frustrating when I see others having great luck and I can't seem to catch a cold...

We seem to have the most luck on a splitshot rigged 4" purple worm or lizard.
I usually carolina rig a 6" blue worm and fish it slow around trees , stumps...
Caught 8 yesterday ranging 3 to 5 pounds in around 6 to 10 feet deep.
We also use berkeley vanish as it dissapears in the clear water.
Hope this helps.
