Me and my 12 year old son fished Belhaven area last weekend. Fished about an hour Friday before sunset and caught one striper on a rattle trap. The wind was kicking on Friday. Left the ramp Saturday am at 6:55, five minutes before the Fishers Of Men Championship launched. We caught a nice fat 16 1/2" trout on a copper, yellow tail DOA paddle tail around 8am. Had several other short strikes in the same area, but no more hookups. We threw topwater, Vudoo shrimp under corks, mirrorlures with no hits.
Went to Pungo Creek and every bird in the world was there. Never saw any fish on top. We caught some 6" menhaden at the bridge there. Tried fishing them there and at the bridge in Belhaven, but no takers.
Anchored up in creeks above the Belhaven bridge and fished cut bait. We caught our first ever bowfins. Both around 5 lbs. We had one live bait out under a cork and something chased him around and swirled at him, but missed. I'm guessing it was another bowfin. Did catch a couple more stripers on rattle traps, but they were small.
Wind wasn't as bad Saturday. Water was 74-76 degrees and tannic.
