I fished the Cape Fear from Tolar Landing at Lock 3 about 15 miles down. I got a few bites but nothing to the boat. The deepest hole that I found was about 28-29 ft. Is that about the deepest it gets or does the river get any deeper farther down towards lock 2? I was looking for some Blues, but I don't know if it is deep enough for them. I have heard that there are descent blues taken from that strech of the river, is this true? If they are there I will find them, just looking for confirmation from some veteran Cape Fear fisherman not milking for spots. Thanks for any information.

There are some blues between locks 2 & 3 though mainly you will catch flatheads and some of those are monsters. The deeper holes are futher down river past the Tar Heel wildlife ramp but they don't get a lot deeper and 35' is around the max anymore. Used to be a lot deeper but they stopped dredging the river in the 90's when barges quit using the river so it has filled in a lot since then. From what I have been hearing lately most of the blues are being caught below lock 2 in Elizabethtown. The Cape Fear can be a bit tricky to catfish from at times but once you get on em' watch out.
