Cape Fear Kayaks is hosting the next event in their '06 kayak-fishing tournament series next Saturday, June 24, at Fort Fisher.

I've got Friday off, I'm thinking of driving down and camping at Carolina Beach. If anybody's driving from the Raleigh area, or wants to meet up either Friday or Saturday, drop me a line.

Not carved in stone, but that's the way I'm leaning.....

I won a raffle prize...

Gave the tourney a shot yesterday. Too bad they didn't have a category for sticks, I caught the only one claimed -- I mean "admitted". Although my stick didn't place me in the official prizes, I did win the very first raffle -- a whole bag of Gulp! shrimps!!

I did have the opportunity to head down early, on Friday -- explored what it looked like at low tide, and tried to do a little prefishing... Mike, my partner for the weekend, caught a couple of trout not far from the wall, and a couple of flounder down in the flats. After he netted some bait, I actually landed a small shark - 10", maybe - and had what he said looked like a blue fight me, apparently clamped onto my baitfish, but not hooked... When he finally got close enough for us to see, apparently he just let go -- just like the crabs had been doing all weekend -- and didn't even take the half of the fish he'd been clamped onto. All I got to show for it was bitemarks on the fish.

Had a good time anyway, and met some great guys. The next dates are July 22 at Wrightsville, August 26 on Sutton Lake, and then Sept 23 back at Ft. Fisher. Anyone who can make one, I'd encourage you to give it a shot!
