For catching shad on the lakes around here anything will probably work, I never seemed to have any problems with the one I have, it was just whatever 6 fter the store had on the shelf and it didnt cost me a fortune. I wouldnt spend too much as you are likely to hang it up and rip it throwing it in the lakes.

All I can say is buy one with real lead weights, not the plastic coated steel, that way if you ever lose it and I snag it and go through the trouble of freeing it, dirtying up my boat and disposing of it I will atleast get a few pounds of good lead out of it for my efforts;).

6ft 1/4 mesh and you want at least 1lb lead per foot. The Old Salt Betts mono is ok for the $. If you get real good with it you can upgrade later.
