With the third stop of the NC Division BFL in the books, its report catch up time.
Prefished a couple days to get an idea of what was going on there. I only get out that way for one tourney a year now, so reconnaissance is pretty important.
First day in Nutbush, 5/12, was rather uneventful for me, but Kelli got a bit of a tug on a square billed crank...
I had a bass of about three pounds hit a 10 1/2" ol monster worm but when I was pulling him through the bush he was behind, he got off. The rain started picking up and the fishing really didn't. We called it a day and headed to the motel.
Saturday, 5/13, was spent up close to Clarkesville, VA. The water had more stain to it but was the same temp as Nutbush...68 degrees. I started with a spinnerbait and put three small bass in the boat and Kelli put a little crappie in...
I tried the fluke and caught another small one so picked up the flipping stick and began flipping the ol monster. It didn't take long to realize the bigger fish wanted a bigger bait and in less than 3 feet of water...
Well, the following weekend was the tournament and I was Boat 48, paired with a great guy named Skip Kraft. It started out slow but as the sun got up, the bass started pulling into the brush and biting the worm but getting them in the boat became a challenge.
This day found the water a bit warmer and a little less stained than the weekend before, but the fish still stayed very shallow. The water depth he held at 303.5 so we plowed through.
As it turned out, some bass were still on the bed and some were guarding fry but all were very feisty and many took exception to the boat ride we were offering them.
I was able to put three keepers in the boat and my co angler had one. Not great but still holding overall in 20th.
Here's the best two for the tourney...
And one of the three decided to go on a crash diet before weigh in by spitting up his most recent meal...into the live well...
That little bream weighed about 6 ounces and could have helped me pick up a spot or two if still in the bass.
Oh, well...hahahahahaha!
Had a great time anyway and now looking forward to our couples tournament to fish with my most favorite partner, Kelli, on Lake Hickory.
Right after that will be the next BFL on Lake Wylie.
Always fun...continuously blessed...love catching those basses, no matter the size!
