Cobia from the surf?

2286 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Silverback
Going on a surf fishing trip last weekend of May to cape lookout. I have my fair share of surf fishing experience but wanted to try something new this year. I know the Cobia are around now but have no experience fishing for them. Was wondering if it could be done from the beach, and if so how to do it?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, 12' drum rod, matching size reel, big circle hook and a large chunk of fresh cut bait or a legal blue crab.

So basically the same rig I would use for big drum? Would I be looking for the same locations?
Wade chest deep and throw as far as u can.

yes & yes. definitely a legitimate chance, make sure the reel you choose is up the task, a decent sized keeper will tear a cheap reel up

Learn how to do the pendulum cast or find someone with a yak to get your bait out far. The big Cobs like the outer bar.

My favorite place at CALO to anchor up and bait fish for cobia is so close to the beach you can step off of the bow of the boat and onto the beach. Study a nautical chart and google earth images and I'm sure you'll be able to find a couple of places like that ;)
