Crankbait question

3924 Views 25 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  jab0106
What is a good casting crankbait that will dive to the 6-8 foot range? I have a few but seem kinda small to really cast well. I'm looking for some crankbaits for river striper fishing. I ordered a couple Rapala DT-6s. Any other favorites? These will mainly be used floating the Neuse searching for spawning run stripers.

I've never had much dealings with striper but I love the shad rap. Suspending/rattling.

I bet that would be a good one.
Key to casting those smaller crankbaits is using 8 or 10 lb line and a rod with a limber tip. Bandit 200, Bomber model A, Rapala DT6, #7 Rapala shad rap or glass rap, Spro Little John MD, Strike King series 4.

I picked up a rapala husky jerk 12 tonight. 4-8 foot depth. Suspending, rattling, and good size for casting and big hungry striper.

I agree with Sundrop. The norman crankbaits are very good. I have flat worn out the largemouth at Jordan, Harris and Falls with them.

I have always had good luck with Bomber Models As cast like a dream and tough as nails. If I were targeting stripers I would throw a white/chartreuse Rocket Shad, not sure about the salty stripers but their freshwater cousins like them.

I need some bombers. I've caught lots of fish on those. Just been a while since I bought Bomber.

If you can find some old Rapala Risto Raps, they might work.

They are diving plug

DT-6's are the way to go my friend.. also just so you know Strike king's version of the DT6 is a square bill, same exact patterns as rapala.. they run a bit shallower and a fraction of the cost.. I just purchased three of both brands.. paid 18.00 for Rapalas and 10 for strike king... caught a 6'4 oz LMB Sunday on the Strike king!!

I got 4 rapalas for 22. You must have a better squarebill dealer than I got. They are 5 or 6 a piece at least and don't have rattles.

Anyone tried a Berkley Flicker Shad? They are low buck, run deep, but I haven't tried one yet.

Not really rooster-tail, I purchased three DT6's that cost me 18.00 a fourth would've put me at 22 as well.. those were not square bills.. the three for ten square bills I purchased were Strike king models... both have rattles but the Strike king rattles are louder than the rapalas.. try Dicks.. I'll post pictures when I get a chance.

Bandit 200 is the best store bought 8' diving crankbait on the market IMO. I sell some custom flat sided cranks that run in the 6'-8' range that have put many stripers and largemouth in my boat as well. A good rattling 1.5 will also catch em good up the Neuse river.
