Looking to hits the creeks off of the Neuse River this weekend. Any word on what the bass are hitting on? Went last week threw everything in my box at them only hooked one on a Berkley black worm. Any advice would be great.

Hooked a few in River Bend the other day. Nothing of size. All came from ultra light rod with a yellow with black stripe beetle spin. Good Luck. BTW are you Brian Peluso?

Large mouth. Never caught a striper. One of my goals this year.

I have caught better bass around here in the backs of brackish creeks than the freshwater creeks such as core or swift.. Right now you have a very good chance of catching striper freshwater or saltwater in the neuse.
I've always had success early in the year in those creeks throwing suspending or floating jerkbaits. In stained or dirty water, fire tiger or black back/gold sides/orange belly have worked well. Senko-style worms rigged wacky style would be my second choice.

Reel-Oars, I fish the creek out of River Bend also. On Tuesday, I caught 3 LMBs. One of them would go some over 3 lbs. The other 2 were around 2 lbs each. Went again yesterday and caught 2 LMBs. Both of those would go about 1 1/2 lbs. I was fly fishing for bream with a 4 wt fly rod, and a top water craft foam bug. I lost what I think was an LMB with that same fly. Had it on for about 5 secs before I got broke off. My fault for being too lazy to replace the tippet. It felt larger than the little over 3 lber I caught on Tuesday.

bspeluso, I have a friend who uses crank baits a lot in the creeks off the Neuse. He seems to catch a lot of LMBs, and an occasional striper. I've seen him do it in Village Creek, and in Core Creek. That was before the last hurricane messed things up. Not sure how the fishing is now in that area.

So how'd you do? I was there and caught around 20 lmb but only 1 went over 14".
I caught 5 large mouth bass and one BIG blue gill in Brice's creek today. Only fished for an hour. All came on a beetle spin

RouseD, what are you usually fishing from? I'm usually in my kayak. It's tan in color. I'll keep my eye out for ya.

This time of year, I would have to throw a rubber lizard or crawdad.

Reel-Oars, I have an old 14 ft drab green aluminum boat I fish from with a cranky 25 HP Johnson. I'll keep my eye out for you. I mostly fish week days.
One of the fish spit up a whole crawdad fwiw. Green pumpkin/gray back with orange claws and underbelly, slightly muted.
Dennis if that old motor is giving you trouble you need to let me have it a for a few days to give it a checkup, compression test etc.

Brent, that is a very generous offer. That motor hasn't run correctly from the day it was bought. Never really put me down, but is sometimes difficult to crank. If I get it to crank, so far it has cranked the rest of the day. There was another 25 HP Johnson that was on the boat when it was bought, but someone else decided they needed it more than I. It ran like a top, and was a very smooth engine. I may just take you up on your offer, but you need to get out of the alligator pit you're in 1st.
Another odd thing about that motor is that it has to be started differently since I have tightened up the portable tank fuel line. Haven't run it enough since I did that to know how it will crank later. I went 2 trips without being able to crank that motor, partly because of the bronchitis I have now, or whatever it is. We'll get together on it sometimes.

Neuse Creeks

If you want to throw at bass, try the creeks of the Trent River, starting with Brice and continuing upstream to Island and Mud Creeks. If I was going, I'd be fishing for panfish as most of the are just starting to spawn. On Tuesday, my partner and I only kept the biggest fish and still ended up with 58 bluegill, 15 crappie, 2 yellow perch, and 3 shellcrackers. We probably released twice that many. The three biggest bluegill weighed over a pound apiece, and the biggest crappie tipped the scales at 2.7 pounds.

Where are some good boat ramps on the Trent River?
River Bend has a ramp. It's a $5 launch fee. You can also put in a Lawson creek. It's at the mouth of the Trent. Free to launch there.
