I could use some help guys. What size and type of line do you guys use for Reds? Does everyone use spinning reels or baitcasters? What type rod (length and stiffness) do you recommend?

Thanks

man, you'll open pandora's tackle box and let the monkey out with a question like that! :)

depends on lots of details, e.g., whether you're targeting old drum or puppy drum in the marshes. i use spinning and casting gear from a kayak, targeting young drum in the marshes. i like spinning gear when the wind is howling, but i love baitcasters when i can use them. i use 14lb fireline braid, but with a fairly heavy mono or flouro leader for toughness against the oysters. prob need more detail from you for specific advice.

you just getting started fishing for reds?

Yes I'm pretty much getting started. I have a 6'6" MH rod with a Abu Garcia 5501, C3 baitcaster with 17# flurocarbon; a Diawa low profile bait caster with a MH rod and 12# flurocarbon; a Diawa 5000 spinning reel with 20# braid and a Pflueter spinning reel with 20# mono. The Diawa spinning reel is on a 6'6" MH rod and the other one is on a 7' MH rod. I use all these for bass fishing as well as at the coast. I'll be fishing primarily in the ICW and the creeks using mostly artificial bait such as Gulp on jig head or red fish magic or pure poison.

Depends alot on whether you mean "Slot" Reds, 18-27" or the big uns!
For slot and under many use the same eqipment they use for Speckled trout and Flounder. I have 2500 and 4000 series Shimano Sahara/Sedonas spinning reels on 6.6 and 7 ft med, med light and med heavy rods I use for most everything and a 1500 series Shimano spinner on a 7ft MedLight fast action for more action and "fear factor"..LOL!! 8-12 lb line will get it done....
I also have a Okuma Coronado 90 baitrunner spinner with a 6ft MH boat rod with 65lb braided line for the biguns that I hope to get to use for the first time this year!!
I have others but these are my favs so far.
If you are good with a baitcaster ( I'm not ) they are a great choice as well...

given that equipment, it sounds like you are all *set* to go! would caution you to take extra special care of freshwater gear after you've fished in salt, but you prob already know all about that. the abu garcia will tolerate salt especially well, in my experience. when i can, i rinse thoroughly in warm water, and if anything's been immersed, i tear it down and clean it up really good. i find MH rods a bit heavy for puppy drum, but that's more a matter of style/taste (i prefer medium or at least a fast action -- helps me walk the dog with my spook or work my jig as i'd like).

Guys, thanks for all the feedback. It is most helpful. I do rinse all my equipment with clean water when I'm finished. I usually do it when I'm rinsing the boat off. I also spray the reels and line with "Reel Magic". That's some good stuff. Any other suggestions will be most welcomed.

Some guys spray the whole thing with a mist of WD-40. they claim it doesnt effect the fish as far as scent but I do know it isnt good for Mono line over time...

Seems like you tackle will do just fine for reds.

I keep a couple set up with a carolina rig for live bait. Others with topwater, Redfish Majic spinnerbait, assorted jigs or Fin-S.

I like finger mullet for live bait the reds think they are candy.

Just take care of your gear and do a good freshwater spray down when you return from the salt and spray the whole rod good you shouldn't have any problems.

tight lines <*)))))>{
