I tried a couple times last year with no luck. Went out this afternoon with the wife, found plenty of menhaden in the creek, then headed to the river, was very rough tonight for my 18' skiff. I was thinking I might be a little early in month for my end of the river. But I couldn't be more happy to be wrong. After about 20 minutes of soaking bait, my smallest reel out started screaming (Penn battle 5000). After about 10-15 minutes of the best fight I've ever had, I brought in this 43" drum and released unharmed. She sure pulled a lot harder than any 40-50 pound catfish I've ever caught. I can't imagine what one 50"+ pulls like. Tried for another 45 minutes with no more bites, but couldn't be more happy to catch my first old drum.
