First Trip for Shad

Today ws our first ever trip to fish for the Shad. Fishpan and I decided to fight the wind and give it a try at Weldon. We caught 13 and at least 10 of which will be striper bait. We started at the first creek on the left and caught two. There was another boat fishing over by the big rock and on their way home the said thay picked up 25! We moved over there but fished on the down stream side and thats where we caught the rest. the only thing they wated was a white curly tail grub.. jig head color I used was either plain or pink. They did not want any other color though.

I cleaned two for dinner and they were quite tasty but the bones were a pain!

Nice Catch!!! Just waiting for them to start up the Cape Fear for some action. Congrats!!!
I need to get some of those myself! Good fishing!
Where is Weldon?
GASP!!!......Kayakman.... Weldon is THE meca for river striper fishing. I have adventured far and near and this is definitely a real jewel of a fishing adventure. I few years ago, I took a friend from work for an afternoon of fishing fun and boy was it ON! We caught over 100 stripers in 4.5 hours!!! I know,....."yeah right" but it does happen. Simply magical.
Hey guys if you want to have a blast catching poor man tarpon(american shad)you have got to make a trip to my home water of the cape fear river lock and dam #1.I have heard the shad have arrived and in numbers, with the rain of late it will probably be to muddy to dart for a few days. You can also catch trophy cats and a few stripers in the tailrace of the dam.
Where is Weldon?
It is just east of I-95 and Roanoke Rapids, NC, up near the NC/VA border

I doublerigged two white curly tail grubs with a 1/8th oz jig head on top then a lighter one on the bottom. For me anyway, thats all they wanted - white. I tried a shad spoon, kastmaster, and green curly tail, and they only wanted that white curly tail.

Just have an assortment of colors and sizes, some days pink/white and that is usually hard to beat combination. :)

Yesterday at Pitchkettle we used, solid pink, charteuse/ black-charteuse, charteuse/red-charteuse, silver Pet#13 spoons. Not a fish on a pink/white grub.

We went thru every color in the rainbow and solid pink, charteuse patterns were the best performers. Later when the sun came out the spoon was the top performer. dont figure sometimes.
