Hey all... I'm looking for a good lake or pond around Fayetteville to get my son started on fishing. I'd prefer to start with panfish or crappie for him. If anyone knows of any public (or private) lakes or ponds, I'd appreciate the tip.

I've not really fished it that much but Rhodes Pond on highway 301 just north of Godwin is supposed to be a good one for pike and panfish. An old timer also told me that the Black Crappie are about to get good in the lake.

There's always Lake Rim just off Raeford Road. Fort Bragg also has a number of lakes and ponds to fish.

Also there's Mazarick Park off of Bragg Blvd. You can't use your own boat but you can rent a jon boat and if you got a trolling motor can use it. You can rent hourly, half day and whole day. When Hope Mills lake drained they took the fish there.
