I was wondering what type of fish are at Rim lake. I promised my oldest son that I would take him out in canoe this week end if he brought home a good progress report. Well he brought home a very good report. So as long as the weather hold's out I was thinking of taking him out to Rim Lake. He has never been out on the water to fish, usually when I take him out we fish from shore. Needless to say he is really excited to go, His mom is not to thrilled. Well thanks for your time and help.

Don't know the lake, but how old is your son? Mine's 7. His mom wouldn't be too thrilled with him on the water either.

I'd never caught anything in that pond... seen blue gill in there and that's about it.
You'd think the fishery farm across the street would dump a few fish in there....
You'd have better luck up one of the lakes, but if your just looking for a local spot to drop a line, I can understand not making a day trip out of it.

If you go to Rim, head across the pond there over to the lilly pads and that would probably be the best spot to try/fish.

From what I understand, they've cleaned up around Rim and made it into a park... It's been a long while since I've been down that way.. so maybe things have changed.

Hmm, from the sound of it, it might be worth giving the "..No Skunks" article a shot. Especially if your son's as young as mine.

I haven't tried it yet -- doesn't sound like I'd catch enough firewood. ;) But I'm seriously considering giving it a shot.

Take the boy on the canoe, Mama will adapt. It's worth it to spend the time with him. My 7 year old I took a day trip down the Neuse a couple of weekends ago and had a great time. Spend time with him now and he'll want to spend time with you later.

Tell him we're all proud of his good report. Randy, there's a suggestion, if the kid's site gets going......Good grade incentives. I'm sure we could find some 'sponsors' for the kids.

Thanks to all!

I just wanted to say thanks to all that replied. I told my son the night before that if it was raining to hard that we would go on sunday. Well I got up about 0545 am and my son was already up. So I went to look outside to see if it was raining, by the time I got back inside he was standing at the door saying he was ready to go. So we went to Rim pond. We didn't catch a thing, but that is o.k. by me. I had blast just being there with my son. He is 7 yrs old. Even though we didn't catch any fish, I was schooled on Poke`mon. It will be a day that I remember for a long time. We also made another deal that day while we where fishing. I told him that I was proud of how well he is doing in school, that if he was able to keep up the good work the rest of the year. I would take him to Bass Pro so he can pick out his own Rod and reel. He said you mean that I can pick out a good one, not one like this Cheep Wal-Mart one that you bought me. It's day's like this that let you know that what you have done in raising your kid's so far has paid off.:) :) :) :) :) :)

big osh, I know the feeling with the kid growing up fast. I have a 12 year old who has fished with me since he could walk. wait till he outfishes you or catches the largest fish, they will never let you hear the end of it:p he recently wanted to know that if he brought a grade up would I buy him a st.croix rod with a penn reel, kind of like dads trout rod. Grew up on pope and I remember that the closest place for a kid to fish was to sneak through the fence and fish the water supply lake. a big no-no but you can't stop a determined kid from fishing.

good stuff fishin with kids, especially when they get all excited. My one boy has been boatin/fishin since he was in diapers. Started him straight off with a ultra mini rig instead of the snoopy pole thing. Just got him his first sailfish/mahi rig and as soon as he's big enough to hold on, he'll be headin offshore for some mahi/grouper fun.

Definately start them young as they'll take you fishin when you get old! ;)

Here's my little man with a worm tied to the end of a rod

Here he is now
