AIR DOWN, AIR DOWN, AIR DOWN. I've been surf fishing the outer banks since before I could drive. My Jeep's got large all terrian tires and can go 90% of the places without airing down. BUT it's like night and day when you air down to about 15lbs. It's so much easier on motors and transmissons. I've stopped to help a many a person stuck. The first thing I make them do before I'll hook up is make them air down. Most of them can drive right out on their own after they AIR DOWN.

All depends on the vehicle and the type of tires.. National park signs on the OBX recomends 18lbs. Like I said most vehicles can get by with more air. Just depends on how easy you want to make it on yourself. I've got 4 little dohickeys that I screw on my valve stems. They automaticly stop at 15lbs.
