last summer me and the family had an amazing time staying at fort fish in kure beach. did some swimming, fishing, crabbing and site seeing. this summer we are planning on going out there with friends so my wife is going to have friends out there with her so I will be able to fish. was planning on taking my kayak. has anyone kayak fished that area and is it worth it or should I rent a boat instead?

Fort Fisher is a great kayak fishing area. Put in at Federal Point, fish the rock wall down to Zeeks island. If you like sheepshead they hang out in the rocks at the wall.

is there some good redfish there? and is that boat launch the one by where the ferry comes in?
Yes, you can catch Reds there and some nice Flounder. The boat launch is right there by the ferry can't miss it. Post up when you plan on fishing as there is lot of kayak guys down there that would probably go with you and show you around.

Awesome. Definitely will do that. The currents not to bad for a 10ft kayak is it?

Wind is probably more of a concern than the tidal current. Not that you have to paddle far to get into some saltwater creeks and marshes in the event that it is. If you've got a 4x4 you can drive down the beach at Fisher and put in. Costs $10-$15 for a permit to four wheel it. You can get some surf fishing in too!

Drop me a line before you come to town, I kayak fish the fort all the time and can help you to fish the area. I can be tough to figure it out on a short trip. It has been a fun place to fish for years.
