I just picked up a lowrance elite 4x chirp (with downscan) for $200 and they have a $50 rebate right now. I'm happy with the clarity and features for the price. If you spend a little more you can get the larger screen and gps as well

I have an lowrance elite 4 chirp. GPS was important to me so I could mark spots for the next trip. I didnt want to spend time every trip looking for structure. The GPS bundle came with Navionics Plus and Insight Genesis which help reduce the amount of on water exploration to find those likely spots.

Yes. The difference is the X in the model name. Lowrance puts an X in the name of non GPS units.

Pretty sure any unit with GPS is considered a chartplotter.

I bought a inexpensive fish finder (PiranhaMAX 160) and it works great, but now I am looking to upgrade to include the GPS. I would go ahead and get one with both features if you can. The GPS even in freshwater allows you to mark locations and see contours of the bottom on the map.

Lowrance Elite 3x, serves me well on the Ride 115x. Screen is large enough to be seen from the seat without too much issue. Less than $125
