Took off Mon-Thurs for a little trip to Hatteras with my Buddy. We went a couple of years ago and stayed at the Tower Circle Motel. Clean, cool, efficiencies that serve our purpose. I digress, the first time I took him straight to South Beach and we caught 6 drum, 4 over the slot. I told him it is not always like this. This time we went straight to ramp 55 and the wash over. We started throwing metal and right away started catching Spanish and blues a couple each. This was around 3pm. That died down for awhile and we each tossed out a couple of bottom rigs with sand fleas as the tide was just starting to come in. BAM, a 2lb pompano, or as I like to call them PompaYES! We each caught a couple of small ones, then wham, a 2lb 18 inch whiting "Virginia or Sea Mullet" I thought is was a small drum. A couple more whiting were caught. Then it was back to throwing metal. Put 6 more spanish in the cooler before dark. Once again, I told him this is not how it always is...On Tuesday we got up and refreshed our metal lure collection. Went back to ramp 55 and the washout area and started throwing. Wam first cast, Spanish, eventually put 2 more in the bucket and caught another dozen or so bluefish. East wind was warming things up. Water was clear. Fish were popping up in a frenzy here and there. Fished until about 11. After a quick lunch and a shot of AC at the room we were back out at ramp 55. Low tide turn and that brought us another 2+ lb pompaYES! And a dozen or so whiting. 3 of which were over 1lb. 15inches each. 5pm rolled around and we ate brats and beans on the beach. Cleaned up and watched for the fish to start feeding. We were not disappointed. Moved down closer to the false point between the washout and Hatteras Inlet. The spanish were flying out on sand bar just out of reach. Some blues were cutting it up in closer. We decided to move on down when I saw some fish action in close right as were starting to pull away. I left the truck running and told my buddy. turn the truck off if I hook up. Grabbed my casting rod and whipped it out into the surf. First cast WHAM. Spanish. The fish moved off the sand bar up to the edge of the surf. We put 11 NICE spanish 2 hogs over 2lbs in the cooler. 2 blues for each spanish. Of course a few early release fish. Lost another 4 lures to frenzying fish. But WHAT a rush! For about 2 hours we casted and the fish were right up on us. Once again I told my buddy, this doesn't happen every time we come down here. Got out there at 7am the next morning. Stiff from throwing metal the last 2 days. Immediately hooked up with some blue fish. Moved down to false point and we hooked up with a couple more spanish. Ended up with 2 and we headed back to the wash out to try for some pompano or whiting. Headed in for lunch and ac as the wind was starting to shift around to the south east (HOT). Came back out and caught a few more whiting and another nice Pompano. Cooler with another good catch, we went down to false point to try casting metal before sunset. First 3 casts hooked up with 2lb bluefish. Big fat summer bluefish... For the next 2 hours they wore us out. We caught 1 spanish and saw a few jump but the bluefish were so thick you didn't have to throw the metal but about half way out. Lost another 3 lures to sharp teeth. But what a time. About 6 or so of the fish were in the 20inch range. On 10 and 12 lb test they were a great time. Called it a day and headed back to shower and sleep. Thursday morning would be our last morning of fishing. Went out to ramp 55 and with a steady breeze out of the South Southwest. The water was noticeably cooler, that or air was just hotter. We fished hard and hooked up a couple of bluefish. Motored up to the point in Buxton in the direction of home. Fished the point until we were literally run out by swimmers wanting to swim the channel where our fishing lines were. They would duck under our lines and swim directly in front of our poles without regard to us. Didn't even acknowledge we were there. Weird...but we were exhausted from 16 hours a day of fishing and catching. So we packed up and headed for home. Ended up with 35 spanish 3 Pompano each 1.5 to 2lbs. 12 whiting in the 1-2lb range. 1 that was 18 inches and about 2lbs+ And still I tell my buddy Johnny, this doesn't happen every time we come down.
