I'm going on a day trip with friends up to Chimney Rock. Do I want to bring my gear? Or is the Rocky Broad too far gone?

If you fish in the very lower reach of the river behind the tiki bar, there is a chance of catching some smallmouth bass, and sunfish.

Could not hurt to try.

The river gets stocked with trout off and on through July but I heard the hatchery has had to cut back stocking.

As I said smallmouth bass and sunfish are possible. Good luck!

Well, maybe I shouldn't have brought my gear after all! I SNAPPED my rod while trying to fix a birds nest. And then my reel fell into the water, which meant getting in (I didn't bring my waders) to get it, soaking my shoes. All with about ten people watching. And then, worst of all, I was forced to watch four lovely rainbows being carried out by a couple of bait chunkers. (No offense to my bait fishing brethren.)

However, I did have a pretty decent hookup with what felt like a fairly large fish, but it threw my fly.

Oh well, nothing a hamburger and beer couldn't fix. Oh, and there was fudge....
