Headed to Hobucken with Capt. Mitchell Blake of FishIBX. First time out with Mitch, and certainly not the last if he'll have me aboard again. Beautiful day for fall fishing: clear skies, cool temps, and low wind. Started the morning off casting monster popping corks trailing some of Mitch's custom plastics. Jumped two better Drum, the latter was nice enough to let us get to her to the boat. After a quick measurement (50 inches on the nose) and a pic with me grinning like an idiot (below), she slipped back into the bay to fight another day. Old drum left us alone for the rest of the day, but sent some pups our way just to keep it interesting. All reds today, which was a little surprising, but certainly not disappointing.

From the picture it looks like you were fairly close to the shore line. How deep was the water you were hooking up with the old drum? And what was the total # of reds caught?

We catch them in 2-20 foot of water but usually target the 6-14 foot range.

How long do they typically hang around inshore?

They are already moving out but there'll be some around to catch through the October Full Moon.

We were following a contour in 5-7 feet of water and keeping our eyes open for blues slashing on top.
