Took my new Kayak out on Wednesday April 5 on High Point city Lake. I live close by and have never fished here. Weather was great, Got out about 9:00 am and fished until 3:00 in the afternoon. Caught a few Sunny's to start out then hooked a decent sized bass. Basically used Night Crawlers and a bobber and fished the banks. Tried few spinners but no luck. Very nice outing, Saw some cool Birds and the Turtles were out in the sun. Love the New Kayak, Vanhunks Shad 10.4 . Came with a fin drive, but I did not use it for the lake trip. Very Stable

You got me interested in the lake, $4 to launch I think right? I work during the week but I'm not to far to make a visit on the weekend. I'm fishing out of a new vanhunks as well. If you ever want to plan an outing I'm in!

Yes $4.00 but it’s only $2.00 for seniors over 55, which I am but either way not bad. Sure that would be good. I’m out of town the next 2 weekends but maybe after that. I also want to hit Oak Hollow and try for stripers sometime.
HP City Lake can be fickle, but if you get dialed in to that lake and catch it on a day when it's on, it can be really great and there are some monsters in there. The best 90 minute period of bass fishing in my whole life took place on that lake (HPCL 8-12-13 - Footballs and fast fishin'). Search HPCL on this site and you can learn a lot. Jerry Condrey probably knows more about that lake than anyone I've met. Nice report, and nice catch!

Speaking of Jerry condrey…..whatever happened to him? Haven’t seen him in ages. Used to mess around with him on nchuntandfish a lot.

high point city lake is tough these days. Gets a lot more pressure than it used to. There are certain days where it can be good and it does have some big ones it but nothing like it used to be. Go with low expectations and hope to be surprised.

Haven't heard but I have not done well keeping up with folks up there. I can imagine if City Lake gets a lot more boats on it, the fishing could get tough pretty quick - it's not a big lake.

That’s exactly what happened. The past 3 years it’s been awful especially with the kayak boom. I have a kayak that I used to use for river fishing all the time but as far as pressure goes the kayak is the worst invention ever for bass fishing in smaller bodies of water.

That does make sense.

Begs the question whether the upper end above East Fork bridge gets as much pressure as the lower lake? Also, there are a handful of 'offshore' spots in that lake if people want to take the time to do some sonar work.

I know the offshore stuff very well and both river arms…..can’t say that any of them are worth much any more. I’ve seen tons of kayaks up the East and west fork along with lots of boat traffic. Covid definitely didn’t do the lake any favors either. I’ve never seen it or a lot of other lakes get the pressure it received during that time. It seems like the pressure has settled down some in the last 6 months to precovid numbers in lots of places but hpcl still gets pressure hard by the kayak crowd

Interesting, I had the entire lake to myself the whole day. Maybe due to time of year but it was peaceful out there :)

perhaps…..but it isn’t usually like that these days. Passed by the lake a couple days ago and it was covered up.

Sorry for the late post. During the week at HPCL, you can definitely get the lake to yourself if you time things right. I'll play hookey from work and do that at times, and yeah its mostly a solo affair for the most part. However, the fish in there are still finicky. I have a launch pass and don't live too far away and have been hitting that place for almost every weekend for the past year and a half. This spring has been pretty off due to the crazy weather patterns. Was there last Saturday and found 3 big bass way in the back past the East Fork bridge. Couldn't get them to commit on a bite, and everything, even a weighless wacky rig was scaring them off. Regardless its a great lake to just head out on if you have some time. But like everyone has commented here, the fish there are pretty pressured. Live bait is the way to go in there when the pressure is high.
