Hey misplacedtexan, welcome to NC Angler. I mainly saltwater fish so can't help ya with the bass fishing but did want to say hello and wish you the best of luck.

Howdy Texan, Welcome. I grew up in Jacksonville but it has been about 20 years since I did any freshwater fishing down that way. I was visiting my brother there last month and a spot I used to fish as a teenager sure caught my eye. I used to put in at the wildlife landing at the USO downtown between the bridges. If you go right coming out of the landing, it will take you up the New River toward Richlands. Used to catch a lot of bass there in the summer. If you go to the left, it is going to take you toward Sneads Ferry. The great thing about it (I'm not sure it is like this today) was you could catch a largemouth on your first cast, and catch a flounder on the next. Try the right side which will take you behind Northwoods housing area. Watch out for the gators and moccasins as well. They like that part of the river too.

Welcome aboard. Luremaker can probably steer you to some spots up his way. He runs Lew's Bait and Tackle in Havelock. There are some small lakes in Croatan National Forest you might learn about from him. Good luck and if you need saltwater help you are surrounded by members that are willing to help you in anyway except telling their trout spots,lol.
