ID this Crappie

I say that it's a White Crappie. The Black Crappie has 7 or 8 Dorsal spines. Hybridization does take place where both species exist but isn't extensive. To add to the confusion the Male White Crappie will get much darker during spawning.

I don't think crappie are spawning quite yet are they. If I didn't know better, I'd say it was a black crappie myself. Just as there are variations of color among the same species, there could also be other variations or minor mutations.

Heck, they all look the same to me when breaded and fried. ;):D

every lake has it's own set color,weather it be a crappie or a bass. as far as i know i never seen a spine count with a single number. for example it would be like 5-7 and 6-8 for the differance...

I'd usually get more worried about what they look like when you've got your citation book in your hands...
