Although smallmouth are often found in cool, clear, deeper water they function quite well in warm, shallow, weedy water when other predators are sparse or absent. In the scientific literature, studies have shown that smallmouth will survive in summer water at temperatures as high as 90-95 degrees F.

I know a guy in Yadkinville that has several nice smallies in his pond. He released about ten adults in there several years ago, and they have spawned, because he says they sometimes catch young smallmouth. The pond also has largemouth, bluegill, and pumpkinseed.
