If you are fishing with limited deep water structure, like drifting/trolling channels, I start with the "80% rule" I call it. so 30ft to the bottom would put me fishing around 24ft and I would spread my depths 2 ft above and 2 below until I hit paydirt and then stop and work that spot/depth. Of course with good structure showing on a depthfinder it is best to work the structure from top to bottom otherwise.. Don't expect to always "mark" fish on a structure because Crappie will hold very close and just blend in with the mass on alot of finders...
