Played hooky today to take advantage of the “nice” weather. Air temp was 55-61, but the wind chill made it feel a lot colder. Surface temp was 44-45 degrees, which is the coldest I’ve recorded all year. Launched at Seaforth to fish around the 64 bridge. There were several other boats there and I saw people catch fish periodically, but most appeared small. I marked a lot of fish around the bridge and rocks, but could not for the life of me get any to bite.
Finally, decided to change spots and try a bit deeper. I started fishing in the channel and found a pile of fish at 40 feet. These were biting and I started catching some keeper crappie. Ended-up with about 8 keeper size and a handful of shorts and perch in a few hours. I can’t wait until the weather starts to warm again… I miss that 65 degree December sunshine!
