there's a reference here to a new canoe/kayak launch site near the 58 bridge in EI:
Stewards of the White Oak River Basin Current Events

(search down for "langston bridge" -- and note the photos).

anyone know more details about this? i like to fish for reds around the 58 bridge area, but getting my kayak in the water there can be a challenge.

thanks for any info -- joel

Just before you get on the bridge on the left is Bouge Lane. If you go to the end of it there is a place you could probably put in at. You can look at it first on Google maps. If you haven't ever used this I'll try to walk you thru it.
1. go to google.com
2. up at the upper left corner click on maps
3. click on the coastline of NC several times keep trying to click on the bridge
4. when the resolution indicator at the upper left is near the top click on hybrid in the upper right hand corner
5. take it to the maximum resolution while homing in on the end of Bouge Ln. (you should be able to get within a couple of clicks from the top before loosing the picture.)
I've never been there and don't know anything about the ramp. It looks like a good throw in spot to me. It could be private; so if it is a long haul up there for you, back up plans may save the day. I did notice a vehicle that was parked in the grass there when the picture was taken. Only one though; so there is a good likelyhood that it is either new or private.

sinker man: i think you are referring to the ramp at the end of Manatee St. I don't think you can turn directly from hwy58 to Bogue Lane, you have to go back to hwy24 and drive down Manatee until you get to the ramp area. I'm aware of this ramp -- i think you have to pay an annual fee to Cape Carteret or EI to use it (i previously launched by kayak here, but no more). But i'm asking specifically about an apparently new launch area right at the 58 bridge. Sounds like this is where NCWildlife was once considering a new boat ramp, but as far as i know, that idea has been shelved (by the DOT?). but it sounds like the DOT (?) may allow or "tolerate" canoe/kayak launching from this spot mentioned in the blog i cited.

They plan to build that on time.....in 2012. I guess you noticed that the group in the blog was dropped off at the bridge. I don't think that parking there would be allowed because it might set a precedent and everyone would be pulling in and out without the aid of an acceleration ramp. A couple of accidents would put a bad light on the preposed Ramp. But I don't know the current politics etc. I do know that some of the EI residents hate vactioners and don't want any access for visitors. They use that bridge and have cell phones. People with pet peeves will call in a minute (if they know a # to call) and complain.
