Next weekend my wife is going back to virginia to visit her family. My kayak is back there to and all 1sg has in the car. What is an easy safe way for her to rig up the kayak to the car and bring it back?
You can get foam pads for the roof and tie it down. You can get them from about any boat/canoe/kayak supply place. The issue becomes... Can you trust her and who she is visiting to tie it down properly for the drive back.
I transport mine like OptiMystic says, I use foam blocks (http://www.amazon.com/SportRack-Replacement-18-Inch-Kayak-Block/dp/B00BCLL52I/ref=cm_cr-mr-title) and set the kayak seat-side-up on them. I tie the kayak to the front and back of my car using rope and bowline hitch and a tautline hitch. Then I run seatbelt webbing with a cinch system (basic cinch tiedowns) through the front seat and back seat doors (tie with doors open) to tighten the yak down on the car. Then adjust the tautlines in front and back. Drove 9 hours to Miami like that once, stable as a rock.
