Fishing? Try lake Powatan. Or take them to feed the fish at the hatchery or yank a few out of the Davidson in the HS section.

I second Lake Powatan. There is a pier and a swimming beach.

Plus then you can go to Celebrity's hot dogs down the road for lunch.

#1 overlooked Western NC attraction in my opinion is Andrews geyser. Just a few miles from the Old Fort exit at the bottom of Black Mountain, a GREAT picnic spot! (if happen to be traveling through at the right time for a picnic.) and the kids love it if you happen to be ther when a train comes through and circles the valley.

Mount Mitchell is good! if you are tooling around on the Parkway the Gem and Mineral Museum near Spruce Pine is worth a visit.

You could take them to Salsa and let them see you get insulted by the wait staff with their bad service, bad attitude, and sometimes bad upset stomach afterwards. . Think of it as an educational experience. LOL
