it is an art form that is very effective for catching catfish night or day.. most i know of use fun noodles during the day.. but at night it is differant..
ya take an empty jug every thing from a 20 ounce bottle to a 5 gallon peanut oil jug. tie on some heavy line add a large hook -i like 5/0 or bigger- put a chunk of bait on the hook. set the "jug" out on the upwind side of the lake. allow the wind to push the jug across the lake. when a cat fish grabs it and hauls it under ya ease over and grab the jug with attached cat fish..
sound easy right? it aint THAT easy.. at night cat fish feed at or near the surface. i normally use 2-4 feet of line on 1 of two differant jugs. i like a jug with a tight fitting screw on cap.. some use milk jugs i don't.. i use either liquid soap bottles or 2 litter bottles. depending on which lake i am on.. the problem with milk jugs is simple the fish pulls the jug under for up to 10 mintues at a time. water pressure will crush a milk jug like a beer can.. when this happens there is no weight pulling the fish upward he can simply sit on bottom and work the hook out.. now i use 130 pound test nylon rope for my line..i tie on 5/0+ hooks. bait with either whole gizzard shad or whole brim/white perch..
there are those that use boat hooks to grab the jug but i have had them broken on large cat fish.
i like to grab a hold and do the big dawg on a short leash thing..want to get moist do this with a 30+ pound cat fish..bilge pump please..

my personal best came from badin a huge blue in the 70ish pound range-i released him..
