Anyone have any recommendations on a charter for specifically the creeks in New River? The main few I always hear about are Ricky Kellum (Speckled Specialist), Allen Jernigan (Breadman Ventures), and Dave Eakins (Drum Chasin Charters, but he moved or is moving soon) but wasn't sure if any one is better than the other. They all seem very knowledgeable and credible. Looking to up my game and put more fish in my boat and probably no better way (other than getting out there, which I do as much as possible) than to learn some new tips/tricks from the much more experienced fellas! I've never hired a guide so this will be my first (other than a head boat out of topsail years ago for an offshore trip). Any advice greatly appreciated!

I haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting or fishing with Alan, he posts some great trips. Ricky Kellum did speak, at a Kinston Meet & Greet a few years back he is very friendly, knowledgable, and entertaining I am sure he would be a good choice as well.

Either one will do what you are wanting. Get a buddy or 2 to go in with you to help absorb the cost. Both work hard on the New River to learn the water and figure out the fish.

Remember any questions you have, ask them, pick their brains. Why this tide, incoming or outgoing, inlet or up the creek?

Allen or Ricky, Allen is my 1st choice because I know him ..LOL When you go, be sure to focus more on how to find the fish, and techniques, rather than actually trying to catch a lot of them that day. The knowledge will provide you more fish in the long run instead of an impressive day of fishing with a guide.

Since you asked, and in spite of the fact that he is not a forum sponsor (he doesn't do the internet very well at all), you might contact Jr Sinclair. www.fishbonescharters.net

Thanks for the recommendations guys. Any guide you go with you should learn. Some guides are primarily live bait fisherman, some like myself are exclusively artificial only. It all depends on what you are looking to do. I will say this, whoever you go with, blowing spots up like WALLACE creek is not cool. There are a lot of secrets to this river system.

I have only used breadman and the trips have been so successful I don't see any reason to use any one else for inshore fishing. Like Allen said depends on what you want to do, live bait or artificial, but let me tell you, when you have a 30+ drum smash your top water plug 10 feet from the boat ...you won't forget it anytime soon I can promise you that.

I may be looking to hire the Breadman here pretty soon myself, just submitted a request for information on his site. Just an FYI, I was checking out his web site and he has one video of a seminar he did last year that is pretty informative, despite one guy asking about all his GPS locations, LOL. Worth a watch.

I would assume some guides are live bait only for a few reasons. Live bait can be netted (free) Live bait can be fished easily by beginners and will catch fish with "more" certainty as long as fish are around. Many people using guides are either new to fishing, new to this type/species of fishing or want to know they will have some meat for their money. Lure only guides are more geared to Sportsmen, or have the patience (and this is a big plus!) to teach those willing to learn (also requires patience on the part of the student). Guides like Allen and Ricky possess the ability to do both and do it well.

I went out with breadman once but it was super windy. Didn't get to try many of his locations but we did manage a few. He did give us the option to reschedule when we got there but my son was ready to fish after our two hour ride. If you need someone to split the cost with you let me know. I'd love to try again.
