My girlfriend and I will be visiting the Elkin area in a couple weeks (middle of March), staying in a cabin on Elkin Creek. I was wondering if anyone could give me some information on the area. For reference, we will be about a half mile north of where Elkin Creek turns into Big Elkin Creek. From my research, I see it is stocked with trout and catfish? But I also read about the trout season being closed during this time, so I wasn't sure how all that worked.

Yup, Frog Holler. I did read that post, and I wasn't sure if Elkin Creek was included, or if it was just Big Elkin Creek. Outside of the trout, are there any other species in the creek that would be biting this time of year? Or does the closed fishing season mean its for ALL fishing, not just for trout?

Edit: According this map, only a small stretch of the Big Elkin is considered "hatchery supported waters"-

I'm not familiar with the two streams and rarely hear anyone discuss them...there may be some smallmouth bass and sunfish but.... Your best bet may be to plan to fish the Delayed Harvest sections of Mitchell River and also Roaring River inside Stone Mt. State Park....maybe 20 minutes from your location.

The regs on water designated as Hatchery Supported read "no fishing allowed," during Mar.

But on undesignated water here's what the regs say....

Some waters that are not designated as Public Mountain Trout
Waters contain mountain trout. When fishing in undesignated
waters, there is no size limit or bait restriction, and the creel
limit is seven trout per day. A trout fishing license is not required
to fish undesignated waters, and there is no closed season for
fishing. However, trout may not be possessed or retained in the
creel when fishing undesig nated waters during the closed season
for Hatchery Supported Trout Waters except on power
reservoirs and municipal water supply reservoirs.

Can you explain what Delayed Harvest means? And when I looked up Stone Mountain, it said only fly fishing was allowed, something I've never done or plan on doing lol. I am from western NY (finger lakes region) and am accustomed to fishing for trout with egg sacs. Any more info is greatly appreciated

And from your post, does that mean you can fish for trout during the closed season, you just can't keep them?

If the stream is not regulated as a trout stream you can fish for trout in March but you may not keep them.

Delayed Harvest means just that....harvesting is delayed...until the first Saturday in June. Check out the descriptions of the various trout stream designations at the state website previously posted: Delayed Harvest, Hatchery Supported, Wild etc. . Not sure where you got the info on Stone Mt. but only one stream there is fly fishing only. The main stream thru the park is Delayed Harvest and that specifies single hook artificial lures...flies or spinning.

Some folks find the regs a little confusing at first. But, read and re-read the stream designations on the state website a time or two and they become more clear, in addition to reading the descriptions printed on the placards on the trees along the stream. .

Thanks for the info. To clarify, the Stone Mountain State Park website constantly mentions fly fishing, and said something about only single-hook, artificial lures are allowed. I guess I misinterpreted it as just a fly fishing venue.
