When I was going to have my new jon boat built I knew I wanted a GPS mounted. I originally looked at another Humminbird model, but when the boat planning first started I had two short deployments to complete before I would actually give the word to start the build.
Just as I got back from my second deployment I got a call from my builder and he indicated the model of GPS we were going to use is no longer available but he recommended the HELIX 5 DI - GPS......which only went for a couple of more bucks. Plus, it would give me "down imaging" along with the sonar and GPS.
I still have a ton to learn about it especially how to read the "down imaging" screens and the sonar screens. I really like a feature probably most wouldnt care about which is the the track it shows on where you are at any time while in the chart screens. While I am actually related to Daniel Boone, I can get lost in a heartbeat!
The only down side is, some of you old guys probably remember, when you bought some kind of electronic equipment it came with usually a pretty good manual....or at least one that would get you started. Now you have to go on line and print off half a ream of paper and create your own notebook if you want hard copy on hand in the boat. And, I DO !
If there are any questions I will try my best to answer them, but a total noob here and lots of learning is going on. I'll be going out again this weekend if anyone has a suggetion of something to try out on the Helix.
