I understand that these rules apply to night time (7pm - 7 am) fishing but I have a question as to hook type. Someone told me that the circle hook had to be inline and that offset was illegal. Not the way I would interpret from these regs, but I guess it comes down to interpretation and semantics.

It only has to be a circle hook to be legal, inline or offset. The inline is what Mr Lupton found to work the best at mitigating deep hooked fish and is what comes on the store bought rigs. Even though it is law from 7pm-7am you should use them at all hours if soaking bait.

FWIW, and I may get beat up on this. I prefer offset circles, coming from many many hours on the Neuse catfishing. In lines do work but I don't think they have as good of a hook up ratio as well as keeping bait on the hook.

I think most of mine are 10/0-12/0 for Old drum. I'll have to double check .

FYI, what the DMF rules require are not Lupton rigs. To call them Lupton rigs does a disservice to Owen Lupton and the many hours he spent researching the ideal rig that would reduce the chances of deep hooking an old drum and yet would still catch fish if fished properly.

Speck do you say that because of the allowed variable of 3-6 inches between hook and fixed weight rather than a set 3"?? I think that statement is a bit harsh. It is based on the Lupton design and does save fish. I doubt he would have an issue with that overall.

I like owner 10/0 inline circle hooks the best. That said, I've used several from 8/0-14/0 and all work. The shorter leader (I make mine 3-4 inches) is key. The larger 14/0 hooks are for mullet heads.

Just remember not all size 10 (or any other) hooks are all the same size. The actual size can vary A LOT depending on the manufacturer. I bought four different types (makers) of #10's online a couple years ago to experiment with on old drum rigs. Each of them varied and one was physically half the "diameter" (gap) of some of the others.

He is not in for the glory. Thus the rig is sold as "Majik rig" and not the Owen Lupton rig. He did it out of concern for the fish.
