Kind of a weird question

This guy I know swears on his life that people have caught some rainbow trout on mountain Island lake. Didn't know if this is just folklore. However, the other day I was bank fishing and sure enough I see two little fish feeding shallow. I crept to see what the were, and they looked almost exactly like any other trout. I was wondering, could these be baby bass or some other fish. Or maybe, they were stocked here by accident. I wish I had a camera that day. I still don't think they were trout, but they definetly looked like it.

JOE:confused:

Trout are used a striper bait at the Catawba Lakes.

Could folks have released unwanted 6-10 inch trout they bought for stripers?

Sure.

Could those rainbow trout survive?

For a time if the water is plenty cold enough

Would they establish a population?

No

Gambusia is all over that one. Can`t get any right around MIL, but can up around Norman. Haven`t heard of any catches but wouldn`t doubt it. If they were gonna have any chance of hanging around for a while it would probably be near the dam.(bottom) It`s 60 ft deep in spots.
