I think I have finally come to a choice with the Penn Battle II 5000 series reel for a new surf fishing setup. I am looking for info on what a good rod choice would be for this reel. I will be surf fishing mainly on Hatteras for the bigger fish. Thanks in advance for the info.

budget? I haven't tried one but I keep seeing Tsunami Airwave rods mentioned by a lot of surf fishermen as a good budget rod around $100.

I just bought a Tsunami Airwave for my wife. She's really pleased with it. Good sensitivity, lightweight, and really nice grips. Only took it out last weekend, but caught small sharks and a handful of pompano.

I have a Penn Battle 5000 set up with a Star Stella Surf Rod and they pair really well. I've had the rod since Spring and love it. Casts a mile and the quality seems like it'll last a long time. It's a 9 ft, but I'd imagine you'd want something longer for where you're going.

I picked up a new Penn Fierce FRC7000 10' combo from Sports Authority earlier this year. The rod might be standard but the reel alone is $70-90 and I scored the pair with a coupon for like $86 so I'm pleased. Not sure what type of line to put on it but she'll be tested next week!

Carolina cast pro rods are good. If you can find the older rainshadow rods (SU1569 and SU1509) they will work great!

On a budget I really like the TICA UEHA series rods.
