Ok so this morning I waz using my 8' shakespear rod in the north top sail inlet. It broke into three pieces after my bottom rig was caught on something. Kind of bitter sweet, my third cast (bitter) but I get to get a new combo (sweet)! I am bouncing between a baitcast set up, saltwater set up, or the old spinning reel set up. I am not the most experienced angler but I enjoy it immensely. I tend to fish in random spots up and down the coast and inter coastal. I want something that will serve both but also within a modist budget. If you have any ideas or advice I would be stoked to hear it.

Man... 3 pieces from a snag? Heres a tip to prevent this from happening again. When you get hung up, dont try to free it by pulling for all you are worth with the rod, as you have seen first hand what can happen. Instead grab the line past the tip of the rod and pull straight towards you. If it is heavy line or your hands are soaked, you may want to use a rag or wrap it around some pliers or something to prevent the line from cutting your hands. Between the bottom, the hooks and the line, something will give... it will either pop free or break off and will leave much less line in the water than if you were to cut it.

Welcome to the forum!

Define what your modest budget range is. Since you broke your rod, I am assuming you still have a reel, but it sounds like you are thinking about a new combo. I am a spinning reel guy pretty exclusively. I think if you are going to try to use one reel to do a lot of different types of fishing, a spinning reel is the way to go.

I second Spinning reel for general do it all and low cost. The only Shakespeare I will buy is an Ugly stik rod. I don't care for anything else they make, it is all low end quality. Shimano Sienna or Syncopate reel on an Ugly stik rod is as cheap as you can get and still have a solid setup under $100!

Thank you all for the welcome and all the input. My budget according to my accountant (wife) is around $100. The reel that came with the crap pole is just that. I am on board with what sundrop was saying about the ugly stick, I agree and only tried the other Shakespeare because I used to have an ugly stic that was the bee's knees! I only have dicks sporting goods and on camp Lejeune for choices. I would rather check it out the old school way, in person, than online. Thanks a ton guys.
