New River Trout 3/21

2047 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Nickp
Heading out of Jacksonville 3/21 and will be hitting the creeks, was wondering where the fish are located, deep at mouth of creeks, suspended at certain depths, or just have to find the bait. Will be starting at Southwestern then hitting French's creek. Any help will be appreciated it will be first trip for me of the season.

You will just have to test the waters. They may be deep, suspended or in the upper water column. Check the creeks the fish should still be in them. Rig 3 rods or more with different lures and find the fish. If you have a fish finder use it and see where the bait balls are located, top, middle or bottom....that will tell you what to use lure wise.

What the fish do from one hour to the next is different and for projecting what they will do in a week is almost impossible. But a little trial and error you should find something.

Scott would the usually be deep in the creeks or towards the mouth? Southwest creek is huge just trying to figure out where to start lol.
Could be anywhere, start right where the boat ramp is inside the creek. Fish that area up to where the 3 creeks split and then go from there. Head up the middle creek till you hit a 4 way intersection and fish there and see. You may have to toss a Mirrolure mr17 (808, MG), a grub, Billy Bay Halo shad, shrimp or something to bounce off the bottom.

All depends on where the baitfish are stacked up. Could be from the mouth to the far back to the bridge.

What Scott said is right on. They can be anywhere in there right now. Find the bait or evidence of it and start fishing. Slow is better IMO. The air temp may be warm but the water is still cold.
Water temps were in the 50 range last weekend and didn't hear or see any trout caught in southwest. But sure was beautiful. Good luck and let us know how you do.
