Ive been getting the urge to chase red drum and trout on the fly. Problem is I'm moving to Wilmington next month and funds are a little short. Ive got a fast action 5 wt that takes a 6wt line that serves fine for sheepshead but need something with more backbone for drum. I can get a great deal on an 8wt, but would I be better off holding on a little longer for a 9wt. I also would like to try casting a bit in the surf just to see if I could drag anything up. Any suggestions?

I have used a 8wt for my Inshore Fishing for several years now and it has been perfectly adequate.

If you dont mind me asking whats the setup your fishing?

My 8wt is a 4 pc TFO with an Okuma Integrity reel. I have one spool loaded with Sceintfic Anglers GPX fly line and a spare loaded with a RIO intermediate line for deep water. The Okuma reels are reasonably priced and have a decent drag but I will probably eventually switch out for something a bit more durable.
